Understanding Hypoglycemia

Low blood sugar, sometimes called hypoglycemia, is a condition that many people deal with unknowingly. Part of why this is a tricky condition is because everyone suffers from it to a certain degree. Everybody experiences unwanted side effects from having low blood sugar. We feel tired, dizzy, irritable, and have trouble focusing.

But some people suffer those symptoms more strongly and have other side effects like shaking, sweating, and even fainting. These persons are more likely to truly be sufferers of hypoglycemia. But what causes hypoglycemia, and why do a few people suffer worse symptoms than others from low blood sugar?

There can be multiple answers to that question, but the basic thing that causes hypoglycemia is poor diet and poor dieting habits. You see, your blood sugar is constantly in a state of balance. Every time you eat a meal, the blood sugar begins to increase. The body then needs to figure out what proportion of the meal should be utilized for fast energy and how much needs to be processed and stored as fat.

Eating a big amount of simple foods and easy to digest carbs may cause blood sugar to immediately spike and then dip to a low level well before the time has come to eat another meal. Persons who suffer from low blood sugar issues generally are eating foods that are too full of simple carbs and not eating their meals regularly enough.

The body’s first inclination when experiencing low blood sugar is not to use its stored fat energy. It’s first desire is to employ negative symptoms to get the person to eat again. Low blood sugar can often be corrected by better eating habits and eating a diet of more complex, slower digested foods like proteins. More complicated foods more often is usually a good way to balance blood sugar levels and avoid unwanted symptoms.

Here is some more information on what causes low blood sugar. If you’re still puzzled about blood sugar issues, here’s a post on hypoglycemia without diabetes that might help to clear things upfor you.
