Of course if you were to opt for some wrapped in batter, it’s not going to be as good for you as say a vegetable soup. You just have to be aware of what’s good for you and what’s terrible for you, that way you can still enjoy your meal while being healthy.

Here are some tips for the best and worst items on the menu for a range of different takeaways:

Fish and Chips: Although they are slightly unavoidable, chips are one of the worst things to have, others include sausages, cheese and onion pie, steak and kidney pie. As for the best things, try to stick to fish, cod, haddock and plaice are the best as they contain the less fat.

Pizza: Your worst choice would be a deep pan base as this contains the most fat. On the toppings side of things, try to avoid having extra cheese, whether it’s a topping or a stuffed crust, and also avoid meats like pepperoni. If you’re going for the healthy option, have a thing crust with either fish or vegetables on top.

Chinese: Avoiding things that are crispy is your best bet as these are generally deep fat fried. The items that are worst for you are the sweet and sour battered meat balls, fried rice and finally spring rolls. If you are looking for a more healthy option, go for steamed foods. Choosing items like boiled rice, beef, chicken, crab and corn soup, and steamed vegetables are the best for you.

For Indian food, just like Chinese food, it is best to avoid the deep fried dishes and those with cream, as they will carry the most fat. The best ones on the menu would be some sort of vegetable curry, chicken tikka, madras, bhuna. Boiled rice would be the healthiest item to have with these mains.

Hopefully this will make you think twice about you ordering your next large deep pan, stuffed crust, triple cheese, pepperoni pizza. As I was writing that, it made me realise that I order all of the bad items, but it’s the same with all foods you eat. The food that are the worst tasting are generally the healthier for us.
