The proliferation of fast food restaurants, convenience stores, and vending machines in just about every corner of residential America has created a serious nutritional problem. Snacking a harmless-sounding verb that deceptively implies something unobjectionable has reached addictive proportions[i]. The indicators of this addiction go beyond mere obesity, which is now considered to be a severe public health crisis. Even amongst non-overweight Americans, researchers are identifying a wave of general malnutrition that’s sweeping throughout the country as a result of addictive snacking habits[iii]. This addiction to snacking is enhanced, ironically, by the fairly complicated range of so-called diet-friendly foods on the market. Some foods which are dubbed lo-carb diet-foods are actually causing weight gain amongst some dieters[iv]. In fact, some lo-carb labeled foods are comprised of little more than unhealthy saturated fat and even worse, they have an extremely high calorie count[v]. Furthermore, many self-professed lo-carb foods are dangerously devoid of important proteins and vitamins. This results in a nutritional shortage that often leads dieters to crave, albeit subconsciously, stimulating foods of all sorts. These cravings usually include what’s closest at hand: snacks and other nutritionally bankrupt junk foods. America should start resolving its snacking problem in the first couple of years of the 21st century. A real, practical, tangible solution is required now more than ever before, as a result of education and awareness are not enough. This is not to say that we should not educate ourselves or that awareness is not going to help in the battle against snacking and unhealthy eating. Awareness and education on this matter have played a vital role and helped to introduce many healthier eating options. As a matter of fact, education and consciousness have inspired the “lighter fare” choices in restaurants, and the occasional granola bar in a vending machine that may have been otherwise loaded solely with fattening chocolate bars. Yet education and awareness are, in and of themselves, evidently not halting this epidemic dependancy to snacking rapidly enough. Adding to the problem is that so many of these junk food products are packaged in a method that means some semblance of nutritional value. Adorning many food packages are terms like “on the go” , “instant meal” or “for busy lifestyles” but they’re basically nothing more than glorified snack foods that have absolutely no nutritional value and don’t provide the needed vitamins and proteins for a healthy diet. Therefore, a brand new approach to solving this problem is required one which stems from the momentum gained by awareness and education, but delivers a real, tangible product in the hands of Americans who want to regain management over what makes them move. Attempts have been made, particularly within the last decade, to supply Individuals with this tangible solution.
