Today, it is a fact that yoga can heal various illnesses like high blood pressure, lung disease, insomnia, infertility, cancer and joint pains. However, many of us are still not aware and understand how exactly yoga does it.
Many experts say that most of our illnesses really came from stress. Examples of stress-related diseases are irritable bowel syndrome, depression, obessive compulsive disorder, cardiovascular disease, colitis, some types of diabetes mellitus, some autoimmune diseases, suppression of the immune system and reproductive problems.
They define stress as the immediate flow of heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, cardiac output, metabolism and shallow breathing incorporated with muscle tensions. It is the product of “flight response”. The “fight or flight” response lock-up our digestion in our system and reduces the flow of blood in the internal organs. Stress can be a long-term or short-term condition. Short term stress can do good to our body because it can prepare our body to any threat from our surroundings. Long-term stress on the other hand, causes damages in our body. It will limit our body’s natural healing abilities and natural maintenance.
If chronic or long-term stress is not treated properly, it can cause high levels of cortisol. Cortisol, a hormone that makes our body be active, normal and healthy. This contains a regular metabolism and a normal circulation of blood pressure. Having an abdormal. The high-level of cortisol can be treated by taking sedatives and as a result will change the feelings and mood of depression.
Luckily, our body has a normal way of correcting this “fight response”. This side effect is termed as the parasympathetic nervous system or “relaxation response”. When we feel threatened or stressed, our parasympathetic nervous system will then be activated naturally. As a result it will deepen our breathing and relaxing our skeletal muscles.
Obviously this is what yoga does to our body. It emphasizes long breathing that activates the parasympathetic nervous system relieve stress and all the negativity surrounding us. So it is important to do yoga regularly to counteract stress and prevent the long term or chronic stress.
